Devon is a fisherman living near Tenebrae. He appears in Ultima VIII.

Description[edit]

Devon was born to the farmer Keldan and his wife, Ariel. His father, however, was forced to abandon his family during his son's infancy, as he had been revealed to possess the powers of Tempestry and was soon after married the noblewoman Celida, in the hopes of bringing her bloodline to the Tenebraean throne. Devon grew up fatherless and unaware of his Tempest's heritage, although he would later find himself inexplicably drawn to the beauty of the Sea of Rains and would come to make his living sailing it as a fisherman.[1]

When the Guardian dropped the Avatar to Pagan's sea to be exiled, Devon saved the hero from drowning. The fisherman then gave directions to the nearby city and advice to seek the council of his friend, Bentic the librarian. Later, around the time that the Avatar entered the order of the Necromancers, Devon was arrested following Bentic's sudden execution, as Mordea's seneschal, Salkind, had discovered that Bentic had learned of the fisherman's heritage.[2][3]

Before Devon's scheduled execution, the Avatar stole into the dungeons of Mordea's palace and discovered the journal which Bentic had kept regarding his research into the Tempest's genealogy, which revealed that Devon was the rightful heir to Tenebrae's throne. Although the hero was apprehended by the city's guards and sentenced to die alongside the fisherman, the Avatar managed to divulge the truth of Devon's birthright before the gathered witnesses, leading Mordea and her newly-acknowledged half-brother into a magical duel. Eventually, Devon emerged the victor and was proclaimed ruling Tempest, although he retreated from the city for a time to contemplate the strange turn which his life had taken.[2]

Later, after the Avatar released Hydros from her blackrock prison, the Titan of Water vowed to seek Devon's death, although she seemingly never made good on this threat. Devon could later be found at the Tenebraean palace, and the Avatar would eventually ask him if he knew aught of the Tear of Seas – an artifact which the hero needed to reforge the blackrock obelisk. After hearing a description of the item, the new Tempest would realize that he had previously caught it in his nets, and would give it to the hero as a gesture of gratitude.[2]

Trivia[edit]

  • After giving the Avatar the Tear of Seas, Devon would bequeath to them the estate of Salkind in eastern Tenebrae.[2]
  • The serving girl Aramina is infatuated with Devon throughout the game, and reveals after he becomes Tempest that he appears to requite her affections.[4]
  • "Devon" also is the name of a county in south-western England, bordering Cornwall. Considering the many British influences Richard Garriott put into the series, this most likely is not a coincidence.
