The sword Caliburn, AKA the Sword of Justice, is one of the eight talismans of Sir Cabirus, representing the virtue of Justice. It appears in Ultima Underworld.

Name[edit]

The sword is known by both names "Caliburn" and "The Sword of Justice". Is called Caliburn by:

And not by:

  • All other in-game characters call it "Sword of Justice" or simply "the Sword"
  • Tyball doesn't talk about it during the game, but other characters mention a crazy wizard, assumed to be Tyball, muttering about a sword and justice
  • The Avatar, upon examining the sword, calls it "a shiny sword" before it is identified and "The Sword of Justice" after.
TechnicalName of the sword

The generic names of all objects are in UU1 string block 4 and some identified objects' names appear in UU1 string block 1. The word "Caliburn" does not appear in either of these blocks, and in fact only appears in UU1 string block 3586, the conversation with Shak

Strings identifying the sword and it's parts are thus:

Block Index String Note
1 268 the Sword of Justice.\n description of the identified sword
4 10 a_shiny sword description of the sword
4 280 a_broken blade description of the blade
4 281 a_broken hilt description of the hilt

Description[edit]

Molded after a sword from Earth, this sword is said to cleave Truth from Falsehood. It is said that the sword cannot be broken in combat. Thus it is a strong symbol of virtue.

Caliburn was broken in two, probably by the wizard Tyball, as normally the sword would be unbreakable. The blade was hidden in a secret room on the third level, while the hilt was placed in a tomb (the gravemarker says "Unknouwn"[sic]) on the fifth level. The Avatar found both parts in these places and used the services of Shak the blacksmith to forge them back together.

It was lost to the lava with the rest of the Talismans of Sir Cabirus during the final events of Ultima Underworld

Lore[edit]

Alttext:Shak.png
Aye, now there was a weapon! Willful, they say, but potent beyond mortal blades. It had a sense of fair play, did Caliburn. 'Twasn't for naught they called it the Sword o' Justice. 'Twas forged by the great Flamebeard himself.

[...]

Broken into two pieces, I hear it was, but where they are I canna tell ye.

Reportedly molded after a legendary sword from the world of the Avatar, this weapon is said to cleave truth from falsehood.

Aye, a beauty, this Caliburn. [...] A fine blade, is she not? 'Twill serve ye well, if ye're careful to use it in a just cause.

That's the Sword of Justice, one of the Talismans of Virtue created by Cabirus. Not too many finer weapons wilt thou see.
