Shak is a member of the mountain-folk though he resides far from their encampment. He is the best blacksmith in The Abyss. He appears in Ultima Underworld.
Description[edit]
When the Avatar first found him in his hidden workshop on the second level of the Abyss, Shak offered his services of repairing and identifying items for the right price in gold. He also told the Avatar about the fantastic sword Caliburn, the sword of Justice. This proved to be important, as the Avatar later found Caliburn broken into two pieces, and it took Shak's experience (and a lot of money) to forge it back into a functional sword. Shak was also delighted to see the Shield of Valor, if the Avatar had acquired it and chose to show it to Shak.
Later, he was likely rescued by Garamon, when the volcano erupted.
Services[edit]
Repair[edit]
- Shak can repair just about anything that can be worn, equipped, or wielded, and his prices are very reasonable. It will take some time to fix each piece, and he can only do one at a time, so have some patience and more importantly some back-up equipment to use while your main equipment is in the shop. One thing he won't do is fix anything in badly worn condition, so bring your gear in before it gets to that point. He can also give you the mantra needed to train your repair skill.
Identify[edit]
- Shak offers identification services, mostly for free but ocassionally for a cost. However his identifications are dubious at best. Just about anything given to him he says is worth 1 gold piece, he can't reveal any magical properties of any item, and he can't identify any of the talismans, even the sword and shield he's supposed to knowledgable about. You're better off finding another way to idenitfy your possessions.
Barter[edit]
- Unlike most denziens of the abyss, most of the gear that Shak has to barter with are in pristine condition.
Lore[edit]
“ | One of the most annoying denizens of the labyrinth is Shak. He is a smith of the mountainmen, and he is helpful, even honest. For a fee, he repairs damaged weapons for the other denizens — but not for my minions. He knows a little about two of Sir Cabirus’ talismans, the wretched Sword Caliburn and the Shield of Valor; and, though he knows that the sword was broken in two, he knows not where its pieces or the shield are. If he did know, of course, I would have to deal with him. |

Trivia[edit]
- There is a bug in PSX-port of Ultima Underworld where any magical equipment brought to Shak for repair will be returned as mundane (non-magical), giving the player a good reason to beef up that repair skill.
- In the PC version Shak can be robbed through the barter dialog just like most other NPCs, but in PSX-port of Ultima Underworld this option is missing from the dialog tree.
- Shak is one of the plot-critical NPCs in the game. If he dies before a certain point, the game becomes unwinnable.
