Training in Ultima Underworld is done not to raise strength, dexterity and intelligence, which are fixed. Instead training is needed to raise the various skills.

Training System[edit]

Training in Ultima Underworld is not done by actual trainers, but instead by praying at shrines. On each of the eight levels of the Abyss, one shrine is found. Using it, the Avatar is prompted to chant a mantra, and if a correct mantra is used, one training pointed - gained by gaining experience - is used up to train the skill in question. The better the Avatar is at the skill in question, the lower the gain in training.

The problem is to find all the mantras used for training. The shrine on the first level does give three general-purpose mantras that raise random skills in the combat, magical and other skill categories. Since that of course is a pure game of chance, one should better use the specialized mantras that raise a skill reliably. Those however are scattered all over the Abyss. To make it easier for the player, below a list of all the mantras and where in the game to find them, so that they can be used right away.

  • There are two mantras, for finding the Cup of Wonder and the Key of Truth, which are plot-relevant and not intended for training, and thus not listed here.
