Sir Cabirus is the founder of the colony in the Abyss in Ultima Underworld. His project in the end was a total failure however, ending in death and destruction.

Description[edit]

Sir Cabirus had the ambitious idea of founding a fortress of the Eight Virtues in the place that was most opposed to it: the Stygian Abyss on the Isle of the Avatar. After getting permission from Lord British and enough volunteers, not only from Britannians but also various other races, he started the project. For years everything seemed to go well, but then it became obvious that only his personal leadership, prestige and draconian rules - which already caused numerous people to either leave or go rogue - had held the colony together.

When Cabirus died in his sleep (some say he was poisoned, but Corby clearly says that it was a natural death, however untimely), the colonists broke into opposing factions fast. The eight talismans, collected by Sir Cabirus shortly before his death in a hope to strengthen ties between the various groups in the Abyss, were looted, since he had left no written plans on who to give them to. In the end, the colony was decreed a prison by Baron Almric and the doors sealed.

The Avatar found his looted grave on the fifth level of the Abyss during the events of Ultima Underworld, while many of the trapped inhabitants of the Abyss cursed Cabirus and his blind idealism. Shortly after, the colony was destroyed by a volcanic eruption.

The Ultima 6 Project[edit]

This is an Ultima 6 Project-related NPC article or section. The information within may not apply to Ultima VI or other Ultima games.

In The Ultima 6 Project, Cabirus instantly recognized the Avatar from Woodroffe's picture in Castle Britannia, which he studied frequently while visiting his friend Almric. Cabirus told the hero he had been doing considerable research into the Virtues of Britannia, and greatly admired the hero's quest. He felt it foolish that each city in Britannia should stand for a separate virtue, when instead a community should be founded which would represent all of the Britannian Virtues.

Cabirus asked the hero's help assembling a party of virtuous individuals who might assist with his vision. He hoped to recruit Lord Zellivan's newly formed Knights of the Crux Ansata and Aganar of Moonglow's Seers of the Moonstone. He felt that the recent threat of the gargoyles proved the necessity of strong protection for any newly formed colony.

Lore[edit]

I, Cabirus, call upon those of Virtue to join me in a Valorous Quest, one which promises to be rich in Sacrifice and Spirituality. Decades ago, Lord British in his wisdom founded eight settlements, each dedicated to one of the Virtues. We Britannians have lived up to our lord's expectations, for the towns of Britain, Jhelom, Minoc, Moonglow, Skara Brae, Trinsic and Yew have flourished to the present day. I believe the time has now come to found one further town, where all of the Eight Virtues are bound together into a unified whole. In order to people this new community, I call upon the most faithful among our citizenry to come forward in this cause - fighters and mages first, and later craftsmen and even children.

Further, it is my intent to bring together in this new settlement those who have seldom been a part of our civilized community - creatures of the mountains, woods and swamps. Whether by myself or my agents, these primitive beings will be contacted, taught of the Way of the Avatar, and invited to join our pioneer colony.

And where shall this new town be located? This has been a matter of long discussion. At first, it had been thought to place this colony in a setting conducive to its goals - a pleasant woodlands, adjacent to a placid lake, or even at the peak of a lofty mountain. However, I have since realized the usefulness to all of Britannia should this Center of Virtue be situated in such a place as to seal off a gate that has in the past been used by Evil forces to trouble us - on the Isle of the Avatar, directly in the Great Stygian Abyss itself!

With the blessing of Lord British, I dedicate myself to this sacred Quest, and call upon all who are likewise stirred by the Vision of Avatarhood to join me in this Honorable Deed. Pray that we may succeed, for the auguries hint of dire consequences should we fail to guard the Abyss against the incursion of Evil.
