Outcasts (Level 1)
This article is about the group of outcasts living on the first level of the colony of the Great Stygian Abyss. For other outcasts, see outcast (disambiguation).
The Outcasts are a group of human outcasts living in their own colony on the first level of the Abyss during the time of Ultima Underworld.
Description[edit]
Those outcasts were willing to give the Avatar advice after the hero had talked to their leader Hagbard. They warned that in the Abyss, it's less about what areas are dangerous, but which zones are safe, explaining the importance of the Ankh banner marking those. They also were happy to explain to the hero about the shrines in the Abyss and how to use them to improve various skills. However, they had never visited the shrine on their level.
Banner[edit]
Interestingly, the outcasts fly the banner of Sir Cabirus at the entrance to their camp. Cabirus died many years before the events of Ultima Underworld, the colony fell into chaos, Almric had the entrance sealed, and later began tossing his undesirables in as punishment for various crimes. These people did not come to colonize the Abyss with Cabirus' ideals, they likely had never even met the man. So why do they fly his banner? Perhaps it was a survival instinct, perhaps at some point they realized that flying the banner of Cabirus keeps them realatively safe from the other factions, as it marked them as a willfully peacefully society, discouraging others from slaying them as savages.
Life Expectancy[edit]
The outcasts have a reputation for being cowards. They know little of the depths of the abyss as they prefer to stay in the realative safety of their camp. The Avatar is able to identify the remains of ill-fated explorers that litter the Abyss using a Name Enchantment spell, and yet one would be hard pressed to find a single corpse belonging to an outcast. There is something to be said about the effects of cowardice on one's life expectancy.
