Hagbard is a human outcast and the leader of the outcasts living on the first level of the Abyss in Ultima Underworld. He is noteworthy for his uncouth cynicism.

Description[edit]

The Avatar found him inside the Outcast Encampment that Bragit had pointed out. Hagbard had grown somewhat cynical over the years, citing "falsely accused every one of us" when the Avatar claimed innocence to all crimes, and also held a really low opinion of Baron Almric, seeing the Abyss as a monument to the man's incompetence when it came to justice. Yet, he was the most clear-headed of the outcasts of the first level and could spare good advice.

Hagbard told the Avatar that he had seen the troll carrying Arial deeper into the Abyss, and that Baron Almric's guards had given chase, correctly guessing that they had been killed by the goblins in the process. Hagbard told the Avatar of the feud between the Green and Gray Goblins on their level, and warned that some goblins had gone rogue, preying on people in the corridors. He also made no secret with calling them "Gobs", that he held the goblins and their vendetta responsible for the bad conditions on their level. However, he could only guess where the feud originally came from in ancient times.

He was later rescued by Garamon when the volcano erupted.

Lore[edit]

Here, be alert for Hagbard, “leader” of the Abyss’s outcasts — it pleases me so that the Abyss becomes a home for every outcast or exile in the region; so much misery they hold within them! Hagbard knows something of the two tribes of goblins, and I understand that the wretch espied my troll bringing the virtuous Arial to me. Hagbard, of course, could do nothing to save the doomed girl, and so must have suffered the anguish of the hopelessly inadequate — isn’t it delicious?
