Baron Almric is the governor of the surface colony of the Abyss on the Isle of the Avatar in Ultima Underworld: The Stygian Abyss and a key character.
Description[edit]
After the construction of Sir Cabirus’ colony commenced within the Abyss, Almric, the former Master of Hounds to Lord British, was placed in charge of a small village and a fortress built near the dungeon's egress. While the surface settlement was indeed constructed, the chaos within the Abyss after Cabirus’ death led Baron Almric to declare the entire dungeon a failed venture and a living prison. He sealed the main entrance, effectively condemning all inhabitants within its depths, and further utilized the Abyss as a place to condemn individuals deemed guilty on the surface, sending them into its depths as a form of justice.
When some years later Tyball kidnapped Almric's daughter Arial confining her to the Abyss, the governor, in his grief, falsely accused the Avatar of the crime after Corwin had failed to bring her back. Failing to heed the Avatar's pleas of innocence, Almric sentenced the hero to rot in the nearby dungeon unless Arial was returned to the surface. After Arial's rescue and the hero's escape from the Abyss, Almric was thankful for Arial’s rescue and asked the Avatar for forgiveness, even as his domain was destroyed by the eruption of the volcano.
The Ultima 6 Project[edit]
This is an Ultima 6 Project-related NPC article or section. The information within may not apply to Ultima VI or other Ultima games.
In The Ultima 6 Project, the young Almric was still serving as Master of Hounds in Lord British's castle. Almric felt truly gifted to be allowed to look after the dogs, believing that all creatures in Britannia were wonderful. If the Avatar spoke with Sir Cabirus in Serpent's Hold about Almric's planned involvement in creating a colony in the Abyss, Almric would elucidate upon these plans further.
Lore[edit]
| “ | Lord British ordered that a village be established upon the surface of our isle, as a point of contact between ourselves and the rest of Britannia. Baron Almric, formerly the King's Master of Hounds, has been appointed to command the settlement. His men have erected a rough stone tower, and the completion of a small fort should take only a few years more. |
