Magic shield
A magic shield is a shield which has been mystically enhanced to bolster its protective properties. Such items appear in Ultima V, Ultima VI, Ultima VII, Ultima VII Part Two, Ultima VIII and Ultima IX as well as in Ultima Underworld and Ultima Underworld II.
History[edit]
The most common magical shields are enchanted kite shields, which could be found throughout Britannia during the late Age of Enlightenment and early Age of Armageddon. Such shields were often recognizable by the characteristic blue aura which surrounded them – similar to the glow which enshrouded other varieties of magic armour. While a scant number of shops dealt in such items, they were often expensive, as their manufacture frequently required either great periods of time or access to specialized materials.[1]
Protective Value[edit]
- In Ultima V a magic shield has a defensive rating of "5".
- In Ultima VI a magic shield has a defensive rating of "5".
- In Ultima VII and Ultima VII Part Two, such shields have a defensive rating of 4.[2]
- In Ultima VIII, a magic shield has a protective value of 5, albeit on a different relative scale of protectiveness. It also bears a permanent Armor of Flames spell.[3]

Dupre's Shield[edit]
- Main article: Dupre's shield
Prior to his journey with the Avatar to Serpent Isle, the knight Dupre had a specially crafted magic shield made on his behalf by Lord British. This shield was of a unique pattern, and its enchantment caused blows to glance lightly off of its surface. It numbered amongst the items the party lost to the teleport storms, and could be found in the possession of Luther of Monitor.
Kiran Shield[edit]
- Main article: Kiran shield
The Kiran shield was a magical shield crafted by the magician Kiran, who hid it in the Dungeon Despise. The spell woven upon this shield enhanced the bearers’ magical reserves, granting them a greater capacity for spellcasting.
Mage Shield[edit]
- Main article: Mage shield
A magic shield known as the “mage shield” could be found in the possession of Mariah during the last days of the Age of Armageddon. This artifact, which protected its bearer against magical attacks, was sought by the enchantress Batista, and the Avatar would have to give it to her in order that they might obtain the Sigil of Honesty.
