Martian berries

At the peak of their civilization, the martians cultivated several sorts of berries, which would temporarily grant psychic powers. These berries can also be used by humans, and are necessary to complete the game. They can either be found, or freshly picked from bushes.

The Berries[edit]

There are six different types of berries, each with a different use. Not all are needed, but one type is useless.

Berry-red.gifRed – these have no function, and are useless.
Berry-brown.gifBrown – brown berries give the user the power of clairvoyance, allowing sight in the dark and through walls. Their disadvantage is that, while the power is active, the user (and the user's party) cannot sleep.
Berry-green.gifGreen – green berries give the power of psychometry, the ability to receive psychic impressions from inanimate objects. This can give hints about the repair of the ancient machines of Mars.
Berry-purp.gifPurple – purple berries give the power of Telekinesis, allowing the use and retrieval of objects from a distance. Unfortunately, while in use they significantly reduce the user's physical strength while their effects persist.
Berry-blue.gifBlue – blue berries seem less than useless; they make the eater dizzy, and incapable of moving in a straight line. However, their benefit is that the user will be cured of any poison after consuming the berry, including the malady caused by improper handling of radium.
Berry-rouge.gifRouge – found only in Argyre, these berries are inedible, but are used to dye the sealant used in simulating human flesh for the artificial martian bodies.

Lore[edit]

There were several different species of berries growing on the planet:

Blue: These berries were only found in one or two places. When we decided to try them, we discovered that they made us nauseous and dizzy, but they did cure radiation poisoning. Quite useful berries!

Purple: These berries we soon named TK, or telekinesis, berries. Whoever ate one could move and retrieve objects at a distance.

Brown: CV, or clairvoyance, berries allowed us to see everything in an area, nullifying walls, darkness and any other obstructions. However, they also made it difficult to sleep. Until their effect wore off, no place could be dark enough to let a user fall asleep or heal.

Green: Psychometric, or PM, berries had limited usefulness. They allowed us to communicate in a rudimentary fashion with a few objects, but only the most complex ones. We were, in fact, only able to find three objects whose aura displayed the required complexity: the power station conveyor belt, the power tower at McLaughlin crater, and the Dream Machine in Hellas. These berries, too, made it difficult to sleep and heal.

Rouge: These large red berries were not edible. They were only useful in preparing specific kinds of dye.

Small red berries with large green stems: As these proved useless and inedible, we did not name them.

Trivia[edit]

  • If the Avatar consumes blue berries and becomes disoriented, and the player enters solo mode using a different character, they will also be disoriented. This will even affect Chsheket and her mechanical body.
  • Originally, it was planned for red berries to give the power of battle frenzy when consumed, boosting both strength and dexterity. [1]
  • Brown, green and purple berries can also be bought from Calamity Jane at the Trading Post. 20 berries (regardless of which color) cost 50 oxium. Blue berries can only be found through exploration.
