Argyre is an old martian city on the Mars of the late 19th century.

Description[edit]

The city is located on the southern hemisphere at 30°S 107°W near the carbon dioxide glaciers of the south pole. The city is build inside a huge impact crater with steep and high walls, which make entry very difficult. There were only two entrances cut deep into the walls - one in the west and one in the east - leading into the city itself. Even the tube system station is located outside of the walls.

History[edit]

It was the city where the evil Raxachk gained power and then tried to subject all of Mars by trying to monopolize the ressources of the planet. That however failed, resulting in him instead releasing a deadly plague when the other martians thought he was bluffing about it. Thus, the race of the Martians came to an end, though a number of them fled into the dreamspace, losing their bodies in the process. Many centuries later, Raxachk managed to manipulate Rasputin into causing the 1893 capsule to be launched and then lured him to Argyre and take over his body. Together with willing human accomplices and other humans whose bodies were taken over by martian henchmen, they turned the city of Argyre into a fortress.

The Avatar later had to force entry through the steel doors with a barge-mounted cannon in Martian Dreams to get the pigments for Chsheket's body covering. However, Raxachk at that time was effectively untouchable in the real world. Returning later, Raxachk had fled Rasputin's body, killing most of the others. The local Dream Machine was then used to confront him a final time.

Lore[edit]

The Argyre planitia, approximately 350 miles across, is surrounded by mountains. Passage through these mountains is thought to be all but impossible.
When we finally entered Argyre, I was reminded of a modern, industrial town in America. There were few glass walls and no gardens, but the barge station was easily accessible and larger than any other we found. This was obviously a city dedicated to the production of goods, with no thought for the comfort of its inhabitants. Raxachk's view of a perfect world, as we saw it reflected in his city, was one in which no soul with any humanity (or whatever the equivalent would be for the Martians) could possibly be content.

Trivia[edit]

  • The Transport Tubes are located outside of the city, meaning entry is not possible through them.
  • Argyre has a huge weapons store, though so late in the game it's pretty useless.
  • Argyre's name plays upon a legendary island that was supposed to be located in the Indian Ocean. The real-life region on Mars uses the name as well.
