Lens Tower in action

The three lens towers are part of the water system on Mars.

Description[edit]

Located at the north pole of Mars are these three towers that, together with the pumping station, form an integral part of the martian water system. The three lenses are used to melt the ice of the polar cap and and direct the water to the pumping station, in order to fill the channels of the planet with water.

History[edit]

By the time of Martian Dreams, the towers had fallen into disrepair and needed fixing first if the Avatar wanted to fill the canals with water. The first tower (found at 55°N, 100°E) had a defective motor and the Avatar had to ask Thomas Edison in Olympus to repair it. The second tower (at 59°N, 23°W) was overgrown with weeds and had to be freed with weedkillers using the weed sprayer. The third tower (at 55°N, 125°W) suffered from a broken lens, which needed to be repaired by Louis Comfort Tiffany in Elysium to make it operable again.

With all these conditions fulfilled, using the towers finally enabled the Avatar to restore a source of water for the canals, as well as free the way to the north pole lab, which had been buried beneath the ice for some time.

Lore[edit]

Lowell theorized that the Martians melted small portions of the polar ice masses to fill their canals and irrigate the equatorial region. Gargantuan towers located near the north pole appear to have been part of an elaborate

system for filling the canals, but the rigors of polar exploration stymied the 1893 expedition's efforts to investigate.

He also gave us the coordinates for three lens towers spaced along the edge of the northern icecap. These lenses, when operational and properly focused, could melt part of the icecap, making the lab accessible and taking a step toward filling the canals. We remembered that we had to fill the canals before we could all go home. In checking out the towers, we found all of them inoperable.

Trivia[edit]

  • It is not explained why Nikola Tesla refuses to repair the motor of the first lens tower, though bitterness towards direct current technology – and that means Edison – is the most likely explanation.
