Syrtis Major is a series of mountains with deep canyons and a system of caverns with a local mine in them, located on the Mars of the late 19th century. It is located to the east of the Abandoned City and south-west of Elysium at 10°N 71°E.
History[edit]
These mountains were home to an abandoned Martian iron mine, which was discovered by the intrepid explorers Dr. David Yellin, Major Greg Duprey, and Richard Sherman. During the explorations of these mines, Duprey and Sherman became trapped when a mine shaft collapsed, and the Avatar, with the assistance of a Martian drilling device, was able to free the ill-fated explorers. Numerous oxium geodes could be found in the twisting chasms to the north of the mountains.
Later, the Avatar returned to the mining site in search of iron ore to aid Andrew Carnegie in the construction of a space cannon, using a mining barge to transport the ore back to Olympus.
