The two landing sites are very recent developments on the Mars of the late 19th century.
Description[edit]
These are the sites where the two space cannon projectiles landed - or better, crashed - onto the red planet. Due to their trajectory, both bullets impacted onto the southern hemisphere on the plains of Terra Cimmeria and Terra Sirenum. This was a piece of luck, since a landing in the mountains would have meant a grisly end in a crash.
History[edit]
The first bullet from 1893 slammed down on the southern hemisphere at 28°S 153°W, south of the abandoned city of Olympus on Terra Sirenum. Its passengers knew they could not stay there and left for Olympus. At the start of Martian Dreams, the second capsule from 1895 landed to the west of the first site at 28°S 146°E on Terra Cimmeria, with the Avatar and the rescue party on board. The other crew stayed behind to set up a base camp and prepare for the eventual return, while the Avatar's party would go ahead to find the stranded people.
When the Avatar finally reached the 1893 landing site however, it was found abandoned, with only Lt. Dibbs waiting to explain what happened, before joining the party himself.
