Exchanging gold for coinage

Contrary to previous entries in the Ultima series, many types of items in Ultima VII – including armour and weapons – cannot be sold, thus limiting the number of ways in which the player can raise capital. The following table shows all the possible exchanges in the game where items are bought or sold.

Supply[edit]

  • Supply of gold bars and silver serpent venom is finite.
  • Mutton can be bought cheaply from Morfin, The Honorable Hound or even Fred at the Farmer's Market and then sold to Boots. By buying at 3 gold coins and selling at 5 gold coins, each mutton gives 2-gold-coin profit. Slaughtering sheep will save money, but costs time.
  • Dragons and drakes are very fond of carrying gems, and they have at least four and as much as eight on their persons. Despite the danger, this is the fastest way to gain money, as each dragon is worth at least 120 gold coins in gems.
  • Gold nuggets can be found in various ways:
    • The mining machines in Covetous and the Vesper mine that are not digging blackrock or are broken down can not only produce lead, but also the occasional gold nugget.
    • Headless are especially fond of carrying gold nuggets. The same goes to a lesser extent for trolls, cyclopes and pirates.
    • The spell Create Gold can turn lead into gold nuggets, but the overhead reagent cost offsets the benefit.

Miscellaneous[edit]

Besides this, there are three other ways of making money:

  • Brownie east of Britain pays the Avatar for bringing the pumpkins from his field (but only these) for 1 gold coin per pumpkin.
  • Mack in the same area pays 1 gold coin for each egg the Avatar specifically brings from his chicken coop.
  • Willy in Britain pays 5 gold coins for five breads made in his bakery.
