Sheep, from Ultima VII manual | |
First appearance: | Ultima VI |
Last appearance: | Serpent Isle |
Sheep are docile ruminants who are raised domestically for meat and wool. Native to Britannia, Earth and Serpent Isle, these animals appear in Ultima VI, Ultima VII and Ultima VII Part Two.
Description[edit]
Sheep were plentiful in rural communities throughout Britannia, particularly in New Magincia, which had long been famed for its community of shepherds. While some untended flocks could be found in the wilds, the majority of sheep throughout the realm could be counted amongst the populace's livestock.
In later years, however, sheep seemed to vanish from the realm, going much the same way as horses during the years of the Imbalance and the Great Cataclysm. By the last days of the Avatar's adventures, sheep were wholly absent from Britannia, with goats having become the predominant herd animal.
Lore[edit]
“ | Among the most docile of the beasts of the field, flocks of these highly beneficial creatures served the common good by providing wool to the garment- and rug-makers and fine mutton to the pubs. – from Compendium (Ultima VI)

“ | These non-threatening beasts are raised by shepherds, who take them out to graze in great numbers. Sheep produce both wool and mutton. – from The Book of Fellowship (Ultima VII)

“ | Another domesticated animal, sheep are our source for mutton and wool. |

Trivia[edit]
- A modification for the Exult utility for Ultima VII allows the player to shear sheep and to later use their wool for spinning thread.
- In Ultima VII and Ultima VII Part Two, one can kill sheep to get 1 unit of mutton each. There actually is no penalty for doing so and it saves money on food.
- In the SNES-port of Ultima VII, when killing a sheep, the Guardian will call the Avatar "baaaaaaaad."
- In Ultima VII Part Two, continuously double-clicking on a sheep will result in the Avatar shocking the companions severely as well as likely upsetting the sheep in question.
