Kessler is an apothecary in Britain in Ultima VII.
Description[edit]
While Kessler tended to the typical duties of a city chemist, selling potions to induce various effects, the scientifically minded man was also under Lord British's employ as a research specialist looking into the properties of silver serpent venom – a drug used in traditional Gargish society which was rapidly gaining popularity as a recreational stimulant and a performance-enhancer. Concerned about the lack of data regarding the substance's long term effects, Kessler cautioned against its use, warning that it could cause permanent impairment if ingested regularly.[1]
Due to difficulties in finding sufficient quantities of venom to study, Kessler had a standing offer in which he would pay fifty crowns for each vial of the substance delivered to him, although such a blanket monetary incentive did mean that he might run up against unscrupulous dealers in the course of obtaining supplies.[1]
While the end results of Kessler's study – which was set to be soon presented before a consortium of mayors and major politicians – remains unknown, it seems likely that his efforts were instrumental in the eventual production of the panacea known as Serpentwyne, a silver serpent venom derived product with antidotal, curative and life-prolonging properties.[2]
