Hythloth (Ultima IV)

Entrance to Hythloth, Ultima IV

The anti-Spirituality dungeon of Hythloth was first entered in Ultima IV. The White Stone was missing from it, but the magic orb in it increased all stats and it is connected to all three altar rooms. Outside of Hythloth, the balloon was found. After the end of the Quest of the Avatar, the Great Council sealed the dungeon, to lock in the horrors within.

Curiously, during this period Hythloth had a secondary entrance just behind the castle of Lord British, one which leads directly to the lowest and most dangerous level of this hellish place.

Walkthrough

Now, you think there is a Stone in Hythloth? Wrong, the White Stone was stolen, although the balloon at the entrance is necessary to get it back. However, Hythloth has the best (although often deadly) magic orbs, which raise three stats. They are found on the levels 1, 3 and 5. Also, it connects to all three dungeon rooms.

Too bad that Hythloth is the worst dungeon next to the Abyss.

Entering Hythloth is not possible by ship because of shallow waters surrounding the shore to the main entrance. Entering it from Castle Britannia forces you to descend right down to level 8. Once there dispel the southern field to find the up ladder. On level 7 go south two steps and west two steps and take the ladder up. The rooms on level 6, are impassable and an Up spell will have to be used to get to 5.

In the Sega Master System version stepping on the chest in the lower right will open the wall to the west.

If the spell takes you to the area with the orbs take the northern ladder up, head east, go back down to 5. Then take the northeastern ladder up.

If you are in the area without the orbs take the northwestern ladder up, then the western ladder down, to get two orbs. Backtrack, then take the northeastern ladder up.

Pass two dungeon rooms on level 4 and take the ladder to level 3. Take the orb, then pass the two rooms and ascend to level 2. Head south and east and climb up to level 1. Get the final orb. For kicks, you can find the empty altar as well.

Later, return to Hythloth via Castle Britannia to have easy entrance to the altar rooms. Know, however, that if you enter via the castle's entrance, you can't go back the way you came even if you use the Exit spell.
