Bucia is a clerk working at Moonshade's Capessi Canton on Serpent Isle. She appears in Ultima VII Part Two.
Description[edit]
At the time of the Avatar's arrival on Serpent Isle, Bucia was under the employ of Flindo, a Moonshadian merchant who regularly traveled between the Isle of Beyond and the mainland to import goods for his provisions shop. A bubbly and talkative young woman, Bucia would prove keen to gossip about her fellow townsfolk and could tell the hero numerous tales about the goings on and intrigues surrounding the city's mages.[1] Most notably, she would confide in the Avatar her belief that Pothos, the city's apothecary, was in some way related to Erstam, the reclusive Mad Mage.[2] Bucia was also able to provide some information about the region, and she could offer some scant assistance to the hero in identifying the numerous items that had been exchanged by a teleport storm. In particular, she was able to recognize a fur cap as one she had sold to Filbercio as a gift for his mistress Frigidazzi, and she would recognize a pair of moonsilk stockings as being of the type generally worn by Columna, the Green Enchantress.[3]
During the time of the Avatar's imprisonment within the Mountains of Freedom, Bucia would become acquainted with Boydon should he have been travelling in the hero's company, and Shamino would speak of a budding romance growing between them.[4] Any relationship they had, however, was not to be long lived, as Bucia, along with most Moonshadians, perished following the release of the Banes of Chaos when the possessed Shamino laid waste to the city.
Lore[edit]
“ | The woman behind counter said her name was Bucia. She asked me my name and wondered what I doing in Moonshade. I politely told her my name and that I was gathering information about every town on Serpent Isle. She looked me up and down for a moment, then told me that the Blue Boar Inn, the source of local gossip and news, was across the street. – from Balancing the Scales (Ultima VII Part Two)

Trivia[edit]
- The model for Bucia's character portrait is Helena Cheung.[6]
- In addition to selling a variety of goods, Bucia also works as a moneychanger, dealing in monetari, guilders, filari, gold coins, gold nuggets, gold bars, and jewelry. She charges 2.5% of the exchanged total in payment. (For more information, see: Serpent Isle exchange rate)
- Bucia is one of many characters in Ultima VII Part Two who can provide a wealth of information about people, places, and objects. Should the Avatar ask, she can identify the various strange items exchanged for the hero's equipment during a teleport storm. Additionally, she can provide leads that open up dialogue with additional characters when asked about the blue egg,[7] the magical apparatus,[8] the plain shield,[9] the pumice stone,[10] the severed hand,[11] the silver ring,[12] the slippers,[13][14] the strange hairbrush,[15] and the urn of ashes.[16] It should be noted, however, that in order to gather useful information from her regarding some of these items, one must ask her about them while they are not in the Avatar's inventory. Directly showing her the blue egg or the severed hand, in fact, will result in her refusing to talk to the hero further, while in possession of the object,[17] and she will not direct the Avatar to other NPCs regarding the hairbrush, pumice, ring, shield, slippers, or urn of ashes if they are presented to her directly.[18]
- In addition to being able to speak with her regarding the objects exchanged by the storm, the Avatar may also ask Bucia about the bottle of Fawnish Ale retrieved from the Goblin rally point north of Monitor should the hero still possess it, and she will recommend consulting the city's rangers at their winery. Dupre, if present, will be rather enthused at the prospect of visiting such an establishment.[19]
- The information Bucia gives on some of the inhabitants differs significantly depending on the Avatar's gender.
- A male Avatar only gets a general warning about Filbercio, while a female Avatar is cautioned to be careful, lest she could be put under a love compulsion by the MageLord.
- Male Avatars are warned to keep away from Frigidazzi, since Filbercio is very jealous. Female Avatars on the other hand get a hint at Frigidazzi's bisexuality.
- Bucia only tells more general things about Columna to a male Avatar, while she confesses to a female Avatar that she would never be able to live with such an old husband and remark on Columna's beauty more.
- All the inhabitants of Moonshade have Italian or pseudo-Italian names. The name Bucia is very similar to the word buccia, Italian for "fruit peel". It is also similar to the Italian family name Bucci.
