Ducio is a Moonshadian artificer living on the Serpent Isle. He appears in Ultima VII Part Two.
Description[edit]
The recognized Master Artisan of Moonshade, Ducio was responsible for crafting most of the magical apparatus, devices, and artifacts used by Moonshade's magicians prior to their enchantment. His expertise as a craftsman left him unusually well-positioned for a mundane operating in a mage-ruled city, and at the time of the Avatar's arrival on Serpent Isle, he lived in relative wealth and ease, delegating much of his day to day work to his apprentice, Topo, and to three automata that he had commissioned from the life mage Torrissio.[1]
Following the release of the Banes of Chaos, Ducio was one of the only Moonshadians to survive the destruction wrought during Shamino the Anarch's attack on the city, and the Avatar would have need of his services to recapture the loosed Banes. After consulting with Torrissio, the hero would learn that Ducio had been instructed in the art of crafting worm gems, vessels which could be enchanted to hold living souls, and that Ducio had made such artifacts for Batlin. The Avatar, seeking to avoid the mistakes made by the enemy, commissioned a new set of such gems from Ducio and enchanted them just as Batlin had, but undertook the crucial step of immersing them in the waters of the Ophidian temples, imbuing them with virtues that would allow them to safely contain the fragmented remains of the Chaos Serpent.[2]
Lore[edit]
“ | He pointed out a pair of men sitting at a table in the corner. "The dour looking one, that’s Ducio. He is the master artisan in this community. Without him the mages couldn’t conduct any experiments, for he makes their apparatus." He added that Ducio was a good man, although certainly not one to waste words in a conversation. – from Balancing the Scales (Ultima VII Part Two)

Trivia[edit]
- The model for Ducio's character portrait is Ultima VII Part Two playtester, Don Derouen.[4]
- If Ducio is shown the magical apparatus that a teleport storm exchanged for the Avatar's Rudyom's wand, Ducio will be able to recognize it as a piece he made for Vasculio, and if asked, he will discuss Vasculio's execution, his mysteriously empty grave, and the fate of the exiled Ensorcio.[5]
- Should the Avatar ask Bucia about the silver ring that a teleport storm exchanged for magic gauntlets without showing her the ring, she will recommend asking Ducio about it.[6] If the Avatar shows it to the craftsman, he will recognize it as his own work, and he will remember having sold it to Keth, although he will not remember the man's name.[7]
- All the inhabitants of Moonshade have Italian or pseudo-Italian names. The name Ducio is very similar to the Italian name Duccio.
