Beh Lem (which means "Just one") is a young gargoyle who joins the Avatar as a companion in Ultima VI in the Realm of the Gargoyles.

Description[edit]

He had been secretly studying the Britannian language from Captain Johne, who was living in dungeon Hythloth. Beh Lem was young and wingless but said that he would grow wings as he matured. He believed that gargoyles and humans should make peace. Without Beh Lem, the gargoyles saw the Avatar as a threat, but his presence pacified them. Together with the Avatar, he managed to return the Codex to the void, and his dream of peace was fulfilled.[1]

Beh Lem is not officially seen again after these adventures.

The Ultima 6 Project[edit]

This is an Ultima 6 Project-related NPC article or section. The information within may not apply to Ultima VI or other Ultima games.

In The Ultima 6 Project, Beh Lem's role was expanded. Prior to meeting the Avatar, Beh Lem tried to find out what exactly happened to the silver tablet and entered Britannia in the disguise of a hooded stranger to find out more. He visited mayor Whitsaber in Trinsic to find the pirates who stole the tablet, who sent him further to Serpent's Hold in order to prevent his past to come to light. Beh Lem there caused a scene, forcing him to retreat quickly. In Buccaneer's Den, Budo hinted that maybe the tablet was delivered, so he asked Mariah at the Lycaeum, but got no answer from her.

Eventually, Beh Lem gave up and returned to the Realm of the Gargoyles, where he met the Avatar at the entrance of Hythloth. Beh Lem proved very helpful in pointing out many things in this foreign land and gave directions to numerous places.

Unlike in the normal game, his growing wings are evident here.

Runes of Virtue[edit]

Beh Lem appears in Runes of Virtue to help the hero once again, offering the hero a ride on his boat from the Isle of the Avatar back to the Isle of Deeds. The Gargoyle also appears in the Cavern of Pride to provide healing and magical restoration. Beh Lem is described as being "as comfortable amidst lava and volcanoes as you would be in a warm bath".[2]

Lore[edit]

The first gargoyle you will meet is young Beh Lem, who will join your party. He will guide you to his father, Valkadesh Wis-Lem. This scholarly one will give you much useful advice. He will tell you that you must surrender to Lord Draxinusom, else you cannot travel freely in the gargoyle realm. Indeed, until you do so, none there will speak with you save Valkadesh and his son.
A friendly gargoyle, Beh Lem is as comfortable amidst lava and volcanoes as you would be in a warm bath! He has a pet lizard named Bet Zen that likes to sit on his shoulders.

Trivia[edit]

  • Beh Lem does not speak the Avatar's language very well, so it is impossible to speak with him, until his language is learned.
  • Strangely enough, no one in Britannia reacts in the slightest when Beh Lem is in the party.
  • His "father" (if you can use this term for Gargoyles) is Valkadesh.
  • Whereas all the other characters in the party can ride a horse in Ultima VI, Beh Lem will refuse to do so, responding emphatically that "Horses are for food!"
  • Beh Lem's pet lizard is named Bet Zen, which translates to "small creature" or "insect".[2]
