Vividos is the only pupil and Scion of Lothian, who eventually takes her place as Necromancer of Pagan. He appears in Ultima VIII.

Description[edit]

Despite his grim duties, Vividos was a bright and outgoing individual, who provided a cheerful contrast to his stoic mistress.[1] Living amongst the bones of the dead in the Cemetery, Vividos lamented that the people of Tenebrae had come to fear Lithos' servitors, and found himself quite nearly unable to fulfill his last duty to Lothian after the malicious Tempest, Mordea, stole his order's ritual dagger.

The Avatar, however, heard of his plight and returned the stolen blade to him, allowing Vividos to ceremonially kill the aged Lothian and commend her soul to the Titan of the Earth. Grateful for the hero's help in performing this rite, the newly appointed Necromancer asked that the Avatar become his apprentice, and thereafter gave instruction in the magics of the dead – which included a visit to the Ancient Necromancers of the crypts so at to learn their secrets.

Following these meetings, the Avatar, now versed in necromancy, went on to meet with Lithos, himself, and returned from the catacombs with orders to inter Lothian's body. After this final ceremony was performed, Vividos appointed the hero his Scion and successor, having been impressed by the bravery and tenacity. He would afterwards bid the Avatar seek out the Birthplace of Moriens, in the hopes that a vision would be received. Once the hero again returned, he would convey his good wishes, and would anticipate spending the years to come with a new pupil under his tutelage.[2]

Lore[edit]

Lothian is the strong and stoic Necromancer, quite competent in her abilities to convey the deceased to Lithos. She has little opportunity to converse with the citizens of nearby Tenebrae; her work keeps her so tremendously occupied. The townspeople are, however, friendly to her new Apprentice, Vividos. His vivacious personality is a good complement to Lothian's, making it easy for him to deal with the world outside the distasteful realm of the cemetery.

Trivia[edit]

  • Vividos' name likely derives from the Latin word "vivadus," which means "lively" or high-spirited.
  • Vividos was supposed to have further dialogue, and would denounce the Avatar after betraying Lithos and stealing the Heart of Earth – an act that was originally to have triggered an undead attack upon the city of Tenebrae. See Plot cuts in Ultima VIII.
  • Mythran mentions that Vividos is still well-mannered because he departed from Tenebrae but a few years prior and has not yet endured the years of isolation which leaves most Necromancers ill-suited for polite society.[3]
