This article is about a character from Ultima V. For other uses, see Joshua (disambiguation).

Joshua is a farmer in North Britanny during the events of Ultima V.

Description[edit]

When met in his fields, Joshua kept his relationship with the Resistance secret, only talking about his crops and how good the soil was.[1]

However, after talking with Thentis, the Avatar met the Resistance cell at midnight at the Britanny well, and after telling Joshua the Resistance password, he became more talkative. He spoke of how a Shadowlord cannot be defeated in normal combat and the devastation their attacks can cause. He suggested to seek Sutek, who lived on the island of Spektran.

Ultima V: Lazarus[edit]

This is an Ultima V: Lazarus-related article or section. The information within may not apply to Ultima V or other Ultima games.

In Ultima V: Lazarus, Joshua at first would only speak about his farming, mentioning the richness of the soil near Castle Britannia, and jokingly suggesting that even Thentis could grow crops with such good conditions. He also mentioned his companions Leof and Vigil, saying that Leof was a simple, kind, giant of a man who worked as a farmhand for Vigil, and perpetuated stories of ghosts in Britain. Joshua also said how Vigil helped administer their fields. If given the Resistance password 'Dawn', he at first kept quiet, but then would open up and tell the hero to meet him at the North Britanny well at midnight.[2]

When the Avatar reached the well at midnight, the hero was inducted into the Britanny North Resistance branch by Vigil, who along with her companions, recalled the tale of the their encounter with the Shadowlords near Stonegate.[3][4][5] They told the Avatar how they met Sir Sean of the Lycaeum on the shores of Lost Hope Bay. Sir Sean spoke of how he encountered the daemon Balinor guarding the entrance of Stonegate, and was unable to overcome the creature. Vigil and her companions sought to escort Sir Sean to Stonegate, but on the way were overcome by a feeling of darkness, and shortly after this met with Sutek the mage. Sutek was fleeing Stonegate, closely followed by the Shadowlords. Thentis, Leof, and Joshua chose to try to waylay the Shadowlords while the remaining adventurers fled, but were unsuccessful. The Shadowlords ignored the three men and attacked the fleeing group, with only Sutek, Sir Sean, and Vigil surviving the encounter. After this tale, Thentis interrupted Vigil to tell the Avatar that Sutek had had been in contact with him, and the mage had discovered how to slay the Shadowlords. Sutek asked for the Avatar to meet him on a small island to the south of New Magincia.

After this tale, if the Avatar talked to Vigil's companions, they all told the hero that their leader had been shaken by her experience with the Shadowlords, and was no longer as active against the Oppression, although they all still trusted Vigil's abilities. The hero could choose to waylay this information to Vigil, inspiring her to take an active role against Blackthorn once again.
