Balinor is a daemon in Ultima V, residing in Stonegate.

Description[edit]

When the Avatar tried to gain access to Stonegate Balinor blocked the way at the orders of the Shadowlords, but offered passage if his riddle was solved. However, Balinor was revealed to be a sore loser and attacked even if his riddle was solved. He was killed in the following battle, and the way to Stonegate was opened.[1]

Ultima V: Lazarus[edit]

This is an Ultima V: Lazarus-related article or section. The information within may not apply to Ultima V or other Ultima games.

In Ultima V: Lazarus, Balinor asked the hero, "All are born with it, but few still have it at their death. For some it is a prized possession, while to others it is a curse. If all were to have it, it would mean mankind's doom. ". The answer was "virginity".[2]

Also, most likely due to a bug, the Shadowloads kill Balinor when the player starts to get near Stonegate, seeing him as an enemy. That means most players won't even meet him at all.

Trivia[edit]

  • His riddle is, "What is as tall as a house, round as a cup, and all the king's horses can't draw it up?". The answer is "Well".
  • His riddle is different in the NES-port of Ultima V, and he actually lets the Avatar pass after solving it. His riddle there is "Sun's round, world's flat. Sailor found 'neath the earth! Tell me how the three were one and to what these three gave birth." The answer is "Shadowlords".
