Zauriel is a very mysterious mage that is found in the Keyring Mod for Ultima VII.

Description[edit]

A great magical dragon of extreme power, Zauriel first met the Avatar under the guide of a shrouded human mage. Formerly insane, and wishing to cause great destruction to Britannia, Zauriel had peculiarly been rendered sane by the Guardian’s disruption of the ether, and as his stepdaughter Laurianna was to later explain, was capable of seeing past, present, and future with extraordinary clarity.

He had correctly predicted the Avatar’s return to Britannia, and knew if he waited in front of Lord British's Castle, the hero would soon appear. He also correctly identified the Avatar's companions Iolo, Shamino, and Dupre, and was willing to sell the hero spells and reagents.

Zauriel told the Avatar he was in need of a great hero, explaining that his powerful stepdaughter Laurianna’s instability due to being born under the Guardian’s disruption of the ether, combined with her recent kidnapping, had placed Britannia in great peril. Zauriel had been able to control her powers for some time, preventing her from lashing out and causing destruction, and had even developed a potion which would temporarily restore her to sanity and reduce her magical ability. This potion was specifically designed for Laurianna, and would be deadly to any other creature if consumed.

Unfortunately, a band of thugs led by the mage Laundo had sensed his weakness during the preparation of this potion, and had kidnapped Zauriel's stepdaughter in an attempt to steal her power for themselves. The potions too had been destroyed during this attack. Zauriel noted Laundo was particularly perturbed by the damage to the ether, and would be unable to control Laurianna's power if he managed to steal it, likely causing a cataclysm equivalent to the Armageddon spell. To further complicate matters, Laundo had placed a necklace around Laurianna's neck which would cause her destruction should Zauriel approach too closely. Its powers could only be negated by placing the necklace in blackrock.

Should the Avatar agree to help Laurianna, Zauriel will task the hero with first helping rebuild the potion to cure his stepdaughter. This required a vial of silver serpent venom, and a piece of blackrock ore. A second piece of ore was required to foil the destructive effect of Laundo's necklace. Zauriel further offered the hero a large bag of reagents to help accomplish his goals. After acquiring these items, Zauriel teleported the hero to his lab in a small in the Cape of Heroes and finished the production of the potion. Zauriel then returned the hero to Britain, advising to look for Laundo on a small island north of Skara Brae, and to return to the Skara Brae moongate after freeing his stepdaughter.

After the Avatar returned to Zauriel without finding Laundo, the powerful mage divined that Laundo had actually hidden himself, and his companions half way between Britannia and the Ethereal Void. Zauriel told the hero that the powerful Gems of Dispelling created by the mage Joneleth twenty years prior might be used to reveal the kidnapper. To create a new gem, one would need an unenchanted gem, invisibility dust, six bee stingers and two spider eggs. Alternatively, the hero could investigate Joneleth's house southwest of Buccaneer's Den for remaining gems. With the final construction of a new gem, Zauriel sent the Avatar off to free his stepdaughter.

With Laurianna freed, the Avatar returned her to her father, who gave the hero the key to his study and all items within as a reward. He then revealed that to finally cure his stepdaughter of all madness, he himself would have to be destroyed by the Avatar. Zauriel restored his mighty dragon-form and attacked the Avatar in single combat, eventually being slain by the hero. This last act of sacrifice served to finally rid his stepdaughter of the daemons which haunted her.

After the battle, with Zauriel destroyed, Laurianna explained that her father knew the Avatar would soon destroy the Tetrahedron Generator, and sought his own death so as to not cause more harm to Britannia with his upcoming return to insanity. Zauriel had seen this as a way to atone for his past crimes. The Avatar would learn from Zauriel's journal that Laurianna had been born to human parents, but the release of her extreme power at a young age had destroyed them. Feeling pity for the child, and fearing what further destruction she might cause, Zauriel had adopted the babe as his own.

Trivia[edit]

  • Zauriel's potion is exceptionally deadly, as he warns. It can even kill Lord British. Using it on Batlin also creates a reaction. Of course this means getting stuck, as Zauriel only produces one potion.
