Ultima IV map of Britannia
Ultima IV was bundled with a cloth map of Britannia.
Description[edit]
This map of Britannia is the very first of its kind. It is supposed to be the same cloth map that the Stranger receives in the introduction together with the books and the ankh, down to the description and the material. The map is artistically designed and lacks the fine details that would eliminate the need for exploration. While the moongate phases are included, some of the islands are missing as well, as was indicated in The History of Britannia, and the cities are not named on the map.
Other Releases of the Map[edit]
The maps included with the first Apple II and Commodore 64 editions in 1985 are distinct from later releases of Ultima IV, with a lower-contrast print and inconsistent color balance: while some stray less in this regard from their source artwork (seen below), others exhibit a strong reddish-brown tint. A second map (seen right) followed from 1986 onwards for almost all platforms and re-issues, featuring revamped artwork with bolder, flat colors and an overall sharper print quality. In some printings of the second generation map, the label for the Cape of Heroes is missing.
In Taiwan, Korea and in Japan on the FM Towns-only paper maps came with the game. While the FM Towns map is in full color, the ones in Taiwan and Korea are – for whatever reasons – in monochrome. While the Korean map is in various shades of blue, the Taiwanese map is simple grayscale. The special US-Gold edition distributed in Europe – recognized by its distinctive cover – also only contained a paper map, interestingly enough of the first generation map.
The cloth map also got included in the special edition of the Ultima Trilogy II.
