The map

A separate paper map came with the NES-port of Ultima IV.

Description[edit]

The map reasonably resembles the original map of Ultima IV, although it is complete with all the islands on it. However, there are some discrepancies. The "Valarian Islands" were never named before and the "River of Despair" did not have a name in the original series. Other discrepancies arise from the fact that the port was developed in Japan and later translated back in English: Lock Lake is called "Tsuku Lake", Britanny Bay is called "Britannia Harbor", and Destard is called in modern English "Dastard". Also there is a typographical error: Dagger Isle is written "Daggar Island".

The reverse of the map features maps of all the dungeons, with the exception of the Abyss, actually taking away a lot of the exploration aspect.

Other Releases of the Map[edit]

The map in the original Japanese release, while basically the same, features a drastically different color balance. Everything is colored in pastel colors of reds and blues. The map also is noticeably more cartoonish and actually lacks the Isle of the Avatar on it, replacing it with a compass rose. Unlike the international release, in Japan the map only is printed in the NES Ultima IV manual.
