Tholden von Bazillius is the chancellor of Lord British in Ultima VI. He also has indirect awareness of the mantra and rune of Compassion.
Description[edit]
An extremely busy administrator, Lord Tholden tried to make time for talking with the Avatar. He revealed that he longed for his younger days when he was a carefree adventurer known as 'The Werecat of the Winecellar'. Despite this, he was quite pleased to assist Lord British in keeping Britannia running smoothly. He appeared to be living with Kytyn at this time.
Upon being asked, Tholden told the Avatar that he had entrusted the rune of Compassion to the bards at the conservatory of Britain, but the other seven runes had been spread throughout the land to their respective cities. Asked about the mantra, he said that the bards knew that as well.[1]
The Ultima 6 Project[edit]
This is an Ultima 6 Project-related NPC article or section. The information within may not apply to Ultima VI or other Ultima games.
In The Ultima 6 Project, Tholden fretted that his job mainly required signing lots of paperwork, although, he even seemed mildly disappointed when the Avatar failed to produce any document requiring a signature. He further worried about Britain's many taxpayers, but acknowledged that the minter Terri was responsible for most of the finances.
Lore[edit]
“ | In the same building is the royal museum of oddities. Kytyn, the curator, is a fine lass, but she’s already spoken for. She’s sweet on chancellor Tholden, who works just across the street. – from The Book of Prophecy (Ultima VI)

Trivia[edit]
- Tholden's surname, Bazillius, is a German word meaning "sickness" or "virus".
- During the Black Knight’s reign of terror in Runes of Virtue II, mayor Tholden was briefly imprisoned within the Cavern of Hatred, until being rescued by one of the Avatar’s companions. Tholden would be most grateful for his rescue, and wished that he was able to join the hero questing against the Black Knight.
- Tholden is based upon an Amtgard player who assumed the persona of Tholden von Bazilius in the organization's former Grand Duchy of Barad Duin, where Ultima VI writer Dr. Cat and artist-writer 'Manda (Penumbra) were also known to participate. Like his Ultima counterpart, Tholden of Barad Duin was elected to the office of chancellor, serving during the reigns of Grand Dukes Sionnach and Derydlus.[2][3][4]
