Spektor is a Serpent Islander and Monitorian knight who serves as Monitor's treasurer. He appears in Ultima VII Part Two.
Description[edit]
Although he was a knight of Monitor and a fairly well-positioned member of the Leopard Command, Spektor was an intellectual who felt more at home among his books than on the field of combat. During Lord Marsten's rule of the city, Spektor served as treasurer of Monitor, and he was closely consulted by the reigning Lord on matters of state. In his capacity as an official, he was responsible for handling official documents, collecting and administering taxes, and exchanging currency.[1]
Sometime prior to the Avatar's arrival, Gwenno spent some time in his company,[2] coming to the Monitorian town hall's archives to examine the various goblin artifacts on display there. If asked about her, Spektor would remark that she seemed a friendly woman and that she had left the city shortly after they met, seeking passage to Monk Isle.[3]
In the course of the Avatar's dealings in the city, the champion of Britannia would find numerous opportunities to discover that the mild-mannered bureaucrat hid a number of dark secrets. Following the hero's successful raid upon the goblins of the continent's Western Forest, documents could be uncovered that would reveal Spektor to be a co-conspirator in a plot by Marsten to strike an alliance with the goblin chief Pomdirgun, with the ultimate aim of this endeavor being to destabilize the Wolf and Bear Commands such that the Leopards might consolidate power and establish a permanent monarchy.[4][5]
Should the hero take action against Marsten and Spektor, either by alerting the other Command leaders as to their treachery or by confronting them personally, it would additionally come out that Spektor had embezzled money from the city treasury in order to fund the creation of a new experimental weapon with the assistance of Standarr. Marsten had eventually planned to betray the goblins and to employ this weapon against them in the hopes of exterminating their race, but in the course of their plot, Cantra's father had happened onto the hiding place where the war device was being stored. Fearing that Marsten would kill him, Spektor murdered the pikeman, and the guilt of the deed weighed heavily upon him thereafter.
After learning of this additional plot, the Avatar could speak to Lucilla, who had been Spektor's lover, and learn that he had entrusted her with a key for safekeeping.[6] She would gladly surrender this token to the hero, who could use it to uncover the aforementioned cache and retrieve the body of the dead knight, such that word of his fate might be brought to his widow, Harnna.[7]
Ultimately, even should Spektor escape death in the midst of his treason being discovered, he would not escape it for long. Should he have been alive when Batlin unwittingly released the three Banes of Chaos, he would have soon met his end when Monitor was invaded by a great army of beasts and goblins, which were led there by the escaped Bane of Wantonness while it possessed Dupre's form.
