Worlds of Ultima is the brand name of the two games in the Ultima series, created using the Ultima VI engine, that take place in other locales besides Britannia.

The Games[edit]

A third game in the Worlds of Ultima series was in development, and set to use the Ultima VII engine, but was never completed. In fact, eventually it lost its Worlds of Ultima status, before being cancelled:

This series mainly came into being due to the big amount of resources that had been invested into developing the Ultima VI-engine, which made it highly wasteful to only use it for a single game. Thus the decision was made to repurpose the engine for more games as a cost-saving measure and to gain back more of the money invested into developing the engine in the first place. Interestingly, the improvements made with the Origin FX engine, as well as using the soundcard for sound effects make both games technologically superior to the base Ultima VI.

As far as it can be gathered, sales for both titles did not match that of the mainline games, which also was a reason why the series ultimately was ended.

Trivia[edit]

  • The series does not have a unified branding. While Savage Empire used "World of Ultima", Martian Dreams uses "Ultima - Worlds of Adventure". This most likely added to consumer confusion and thus lower sales.
