Kliftin is a retired soldier who runs an armoury in Jhelom during Ultima VII.
Description[edit]
As an old man who had seen his share of battle, Kliftin was able to speak at length regarding his former life as a fighter, and he would explain how his skills suturing wounds as a field medic eventually translated into his current abilities as a tailor. Unlike the majority of Jhelom's populace, Kliftin was forthright in voicing his distaste with the constant dueling the city saw. The old armourer proved sympathetic when informed that Sprellic, the innkeeper, had unwittingly earned himself the wrath of the Library of Scars by mistakenly taking their "honor flag," which was then stolen from him by an impostor claiming to be the Avatar (likely Sullivan, the trickster).[1]
Not wishing Sprellic to die, Kliftin offered to assist in mending the situation by crafting a false honor flag. He claimed that once the Library accepted it, its members would be loathe to admit that they had been duped by a counterfeit should the substitution ever be uncovered. The flag was eventually made and delivered to the fighters, who withdrew their various challenges against Sprellic.[2]
Lore[edit]
“ | Kliftin, it seems, has seen his share of battle in many past confrontations, and has long since retired to Jhelom. Apparently, in addition to mastering the skills necessary for a good soldier, he also studied field dressing, and has considerable talent with a needle and thread. – from Key to the Black Gate (Ultima VII)

Trivia[edit]
- In Ultima VII the Avatar has several options by which the affair with Sprellic and the Library of Scars can be resolved. It is possible for the hero to kill Syria, Timmons and Vokes in combat as Sprellic's champion, or to simply murder Sprellic before the duel. The creation of the false honor flag, however, is considered the canonical solution, as Ultima Underworld II features Syria and mentions Sprellic as being very much alive.
- In the Key to the Black Gate, Kliftin provides Anton with an overview of Jhelom, mentioning the local fervor for dueling and describing the residents of the town. His insights into the city of Valor would eventually be compiled by the scholar in the hopes that such information might be of use to the Avatar.[4]
- In the SNES-port of Ultima VII, Kliftin is not an armorer, although his love of sewing still stems from his war days as a field medic. In order to craft a new honor standard for Sprellic, he requires the Avatar to first bring him some cloth.[5] In this version of the game, he is also credited as the author of Needlepoint Techniques, a guide to various methods of tapestry repair.[6]
