Delphynia is the horticulturalist and a de facto healer for Fawn, a city on the Serpent Isle. She appears in Ultima VII Part Two.

Description[edit]

A herbalist and horticulturalist by trade, Delphynia found herself in the uncomfortable position of healer during the final days of Fawn. The city's proper healer, Seth, had been killed by Goblins when he ventured alone into the Knight's Forest to gather wild plants. Delphynia did her best, but had little confidence in her abilities as a healer.

One day, a ship from Britannia arrived in Fawn, carrying with it a group of travellers, most of whom belonged to the Fellowship. One of the sailors was a man named Ruggs, who despite being kindhearted was horribly disfigured. Nevertheless, Delphynia found herself attracted to the man, who lavished affection towards her. Even as she realized she was falling in love with him, a series of teleport storms began to rock all of Serpent Isle. At the urging of Kylista, Priestess of Beauty, and the Great Captains, the ruler of Fawn, Lady Yelinda, Ruggs and the rest of the Fellowship banished from the city, fearing their "pernicious declamation" had brought about the storms. A deeply religious person, Delphynia had always embraced Fawn's teachings about beauty. Secretly, she blamed herself for causing the storms by her forbidden love with Ruggs, an ugly person.

Delphynia had met Ruggs when he accompanied the sage Batlin, the leader of the Fellowship band, to her shop. Batlin was disappointed to find Delphynia had few reagents for sale. She suggested Moonshade. Batlin also questioned her about the ancient serpent ruins and artifacts of the island, but Delphynia had no information to offer.

The Avatar arrived in Fawn soon thereafter and delivered a letter from Ruggs professing his love, and Delphynia (though still clinging to her beliefs) asked the Avatar to return a similar one. The hero also sought some varo leaves at the suggestion of Harnna of Monitor, leaves which possessed curative properties.

When the Avatar's companion, Dupre, was soon arrested for heresy, however, Delphynia soon threw herself back into her religious fanaticism. At Dupre's trial, she accused Dupre of being a lecher and suggested he and the Avatar might be possessed by demons. She also hardened her heart against Ruggs. However, when the trial was declared corrupt by the Oracle of Fawn itself, Delphynia softened her position.

Like most of the citizens of Fawn, Delphynia is killed when the Insanity Bane (possessing the body of Iolo) destroys the city.

Lore[edit]

The other woman, Delphynia, was an herbalist. She served as apprentice to the town’s healer. I explained to them that I was looking for information about Fawn, and they directed me to the Broken Oar, a tavern, where the Great Captains were meeting.

Trivia[edit]

  • A search of Delphynia's dwelling adjacent to the royal gardens will turn up 10 filari, 10 ginseng, 10 nightshade, 3 mandrakes, 10 garlic, and 10 black pearls.
  • Although Dupre is the defendant by default, it is also possible for Shamino or Iolo to be arrested. If so, Delphynia will state that Shamino is not a bad sort, or that Iolo is a kindly man and not likely to consort with daemons.[2].
