Brendann is a Serpent Islander who serves as the leader of the Monitorian Wolf Command. He appears in Ultima VII Part Two.
Description[edit]
At the time of the Avatar's adventures on Serpent Isle, Brendann was the Knight who led the Command of the Wolf, a Monitorian faction whose martial philosophy focused on nimble combat maneuvers, cunning military strategy, and expansionist policies aimed to bring Monitorian influence to rest of the Serpent Isle mainland.[1] His views on these topics, however, often brought him into conflict with the leader of the Bear Command, Caladin, who preferred a more isolationist approach that focused on the defense of the city.[2] While Brendann was generally acknowledged as a shrewd warrior and competent leader, his primary source of renown was his appetite for chasing skirts,[3][4][5] and if queried, Brendann would boast of his sexual conquests, implying that he had bedded virtually every female Knight in the City.[6]
Following the death of Monitor's Knight Champion, Astrid, word spread that there was a human collaborating with the Goblins outside of the city and that the patrol Astrid had been leading had been betrayed.[7] Steadfast in his loyalty to members of his own Command, Brendann refused to entertain accusations that Krayg, a fellow Wolf, was responsible, and he voiced his opinion that Luther, Krayg's initial accuser, was the traitor.[8] Eventually, however, the Avatar was able to uncover the innkeeper Simon as a Goblin plant masquerading as a man, and the hero thereafter staged a raid upon the Goblins' village and retook the lost Helm of Courage.
Should the Avatar have then found and subsequently brought to light evidence of Lord Marsten and Spektor's collaboration with the Goblin king Pomdirgun,[9] Brendann would find himself elevated to the Lordship following Marsten's arrest.[10] His reign over the city, however, would prove to be a short one, and he perished in the violent seizure of Monitor by a horde of Goblins and beasts headed by the loosed Bane of Wantonness, which had possessed the body of Dupre to attain its ends.
Lore[edit]
“ | In the tavern room was a man named Brendann, who offered to buy my dinner. I said no, but thanked him for the offer. He then offered to buy me an ale. I again declined, politely. When he offered to share my bed, I had to ask him to leave me alone. As Brendann left , Simon chuckled and said that Brendann and Lucilla often propositioned visitors that came to town. "They're two of a kind, they are." – from Balancing the Scales (Ultima VII Part Two)

Trivia[edit]
- The model for Brendann's portrait is Ultima VII Part Two programmer, Brendan Segraves.
- A search of Brendann's quarters will turn up a locked chest. If it is picked, one may find a comb, mirror, as well as some wine and glasses: all articles befitting a ladies man.
- If the Avatar is female, Brendann will flirt with her and may offer to train her in a unique form of "sparring" at his quarters on the corner of Kosric Road and Roland Street.[12] Should she consent to a tryst, he will make her a gift of a Gwani-fur cloak.[13]
- It is curious that Brendann appears to become Lord of Monitor following Marsten's arrest (as is indicated by the necessity of petitioning him should Iolo still be imprisoned at this point in the game).[10] According to Flicken, it should be Caladin's turn to act as Lord after Marsten's.[14]
- Should the Avatar show Harnna the moonsilk stockings that were exchanged for the hero's blackrock serpent by a teleport storm, she will recommend asking Brendann about them, indicating that he probably has a fair amount of experience removing such articles from women's legs.[15] If asked, Brendann will claim that they are the sort of clothing that might be worn by a female mage.[16]
- According to Lydia, Brendann sports a number of tattoos on intimate portions of his anatomy that commemorate his deeds as a Knight.[17]
- In the course of reminiscing about his conquests, Brendann will imply that he has bedded Harnnna and is Cantra's real father, indicating that there is a resemblance between them.[6]
