Flicken is a Serpent Islander who is the chief of Monitor's pikemen. He appears in Ultima VII Part Two.
Description[edit]
Flicken was a Knight of Monitor belonging to the Bear Command. He served as chief pikeman and took on the task of guarding the southwest gate to the city, where he proved to be first Monitorian to encounter the Avatar after the hero's ship made landfall on Serpent Isle. Like many of Monitor's inhabitants, he was distrustful of outsiders, and only allowed the Avatar to venture into the city under escort, with the understanding that the hero would directly proceed to an audience with Lord Marsten.[1]
Blustery and argumentative, Flicken could be drawn into discussing the various Commands and proved quick to disparage the politics of factions other than his own. For the most part, however, he was relatively uninvolved in the intrigues of the city, and spent much of his time either at his post or at his quarters on Warriors' Road.[2]
Flicken eventually perished when Monitor fell to a great army of Goblins and monsters, which were led by Sir Dupre during his time under the possession of the Bane of Wantonness.
Trivia[edit]
- A search of Flicken's quarters on Warriors Road will turn up 2 monetari.
- It is somewhat unclear as to what the function of Monitor's southwest gate is or why it has need of a guard, given that there is only a small strip of uninhabited seacoast to the direct west of the Monitor.
- It is unclear what distinction there is between Flicken's position as "Chief Pikeman"[1] and the role that Harnna ascribes to Caladin in calling him the "commander of the Pikemen,"[3] although one would assume that Caladin, as a Command leader, is higher up the chain of command.
