Transcript: Zachariah

Zachariah is an astronomer and mage living in Moonglow at the time of Ultima V.

Description[edit]

The knowledgeable mage told the hero how to use the positioning of the comets in the night sky to predict where a Shadowlord would appear. If the Avatar confirmed he is the hero of legend, and provided the Resistance password: DAWN, Zachariah would tell the Avatar to speak with Goeth in Jhelom concerning the moongates, which can lead to the discovery and use of moonstones.[1]

Ultima V: Lazarus[edit]

This is an Ultima V: Lazarus-related article or section. The information within may not apply to Ultima V or other Ultima games.

In the Lazarus version of the game, Zachariah was also something of a recluse. He used to be quite well known and popular amongst the mage communities of Moonglow and the Lycaeum – his knowledge and teachings were highly sought after – but shortly after the Oppression led by Donn Piatt gained power in the City of Honesty his opinions started to be met with derision, then hostility. All those showing interest in his research regarding the nature of the three comets and their relationship to the Shadowlords were openly persecuted. He was eventually forced to seal himself up in his tower with his studies and his observatory. As far as the residents of Moonglow could tell, he never left the confines of his home. Zachariah feared an upcoming war between Blackthorn and the mages of the Lycaeum, and was certain the keep would ultimately lose due to their hesitance to embrace the dark arts.[2]

Zachariah was introduced to the Resistance by none other than Mariah, who came to his tower one night seeking refuge from the city guard. With the help of Malifora and Nilrem they managed to establish a smuggling route with Buccaneer’s Den to keep the Lycaeum supplied with reagents. Zachariah funded Nilrem to purchase excess reagents and then siphon off the excess to the Lycaeum, but was slowly running low on gold. Malifora couldn't risk the exposure due to her being a former member of the Great Council, and Nilrem was getting paid for his help almost as much as Captain Dalgrin was.[3][4]

The astronomer related how he was formerly in contact with Goeth regarding the nature of the moongates, and at one point the Great Council member from Jhelom had visited his observatory. They had been in contact for some time, and Goeth had ascertained some great knowledge about their nature, but was driven mad by the Oppression before being able to relay his secrets. If the Avatar spoke to Goeth,[5] the former Great Council member revealed that it might be possible to move the location of a moongate by digging up the corresponding moonstone and moving it to a different location, but he had cast a spell preventing this from happening.
