Transcript: Goeth

Goeth is the member of the Great Council representing Jhelom during the events of Ultima V.

Description[edit]

A confused and bewildered mage, Goeth could be found wandering the walls of the city. The Avatar could speak to Trian, and learn that Goeth had gone quite insane and often needed to hear words backwards to understand. If spoken to backwards, Goeth would reveal the Word of Power for Dungeon Destard, and that moonstones could be dug up from the location of a moongate and planted at another location, moving the moongate destination.[1]

Ultima V: Lazarus[edit]

This is an Ultima V: Lazarus-related article or section. The information within may not apply to Ultima V or other Ultima games.

In Ultima V: Lazarus, Goeth was the former member of the Great Council who was driven insane by torture at the hands of the Oppression. Nicole revealed that Goeth had been going progressively senile prior to the rise of Blackthorn, but during the Night of the Black Gloves, the old mage had disappeared for several days.[2] Upon his return, the old man was terrified of being confined indoors, and had taken to wandering long hours outside spouting gibberish. Should the Avatar have first spoken with the trainer Thorne, his adventuring partner Trian would note that Goeth might know the Word of Power for Destard, but the old mage had taken to reversing the word order and even the pronunciation of his words, and was now difficult to talk to.[3]

Goeth readily revealed the Word of Power when queried if the Avatar had talked to Trian; the addled older man would mistake the hero for Ean, however, stating that the former mayor of Jhelom had been late for the most recent Council meeting. Goeth rambled on that Ean was living on an island by himself, but felt the man must have been driven crazy by the number of spiders there.[4]

The astronomer Zachariah related how he was formerly in contact with Goeth regarding the nature of the moongates, and at one point the Great Council member from Jhelom had visited his observatory.[5] They had been in contact for some time, and Goeth had ascertained some great knowledge about their nature, but was driven mad by the Oppression before being able to relay his secrets. If the Avatar spoke to Goeth, the former Great Council member revealed that it might be possible to move the location of a moongate by digging up the corresponding moonstone and moving it to a different location, but he had cast a spell preventing this from happening.
