Petre, from Ultima VII
Species: human
Appearances
Ultima VII
Location: Trinsic

Petre is the caretaker of the stables in Trinsic. He is notable as one of the first people to discover the body of the murdered blacksmith Christopher at the beginning of Ultima VII.

Description[edit]

Petre was first seen conversing with Iolo about the murder outside of the Trinsic stables when the Avatar arrived via a red moongate. He could later relate to the Avatar, then charged with the investigation of the crime by mayor Finnigan, how he had found the mutilated corpses of Christopher and Inamo (a gargoyle worker living in the backroom of the stables) the morning of the hero's arrival. He also made observations about a set of bloody footprints he had found leading in the direction of the docks, remarking that they likely belonged to the murderers.[1]

After the Avatar had finished his investigations in Trinsic, Petre appeared to slowly return to normal life, and was permitted by Finnigan to clean the stables within twenty-four hours of the bodies' discovery. Once the murder sight was cleaned, the peasant re-opened business and returned to horse husbandry – although he still complained of the smell left by the grotesque affair for some time afterward.[2]

Goods[edit]

Petre will make the following offer in Ultima VII:

According to the deed, one of the mounts is named "Fletcher."[3]

Trivia[edit]

  • If Spark is in the party, Petre will tease when asked about him that, "He's a good lad, [...] when he's not pilfering things from honest shopkeepers."[4]
  • In the SNES-port of Ultima VII, Petre does not happen upon the bodies of Christopher and Inamo, as the pair have merely been kidnapped instead of murdered. Rather, he comes upon the nefarious note left by their captors, which reads "Christopher and Inamo are troublemakers. Let this serve as a warning." He advises the Avatar take information of this crime to the mayor.[5]
