Daphne is a barmaid working in Jhelom during Ultima VII.

Description[edit]

Daphne worked at Sprellic's Bunk and Stool, handling guest's rooms and exchanging barbed comments with her co-worker and house mate, Ophelia. An athletic girl, she was often capable of wrestling unruly patrons to the ground when tempers ran high and seemed to be in possession of a low tolerance for nonsense. While speaking to the Avatar, she would frequently complained of having to shoulder additional work due to Ophelia's laziness and the recent absence of the establishment's owner – who had run afoul of the Library of Scars and was facing a duel against three combatants (Syria, Vokes and Timmons). At the time of the hero's arrival in Jhelom, Daphne was fielding bets against Sprellic, pragmatically assessing the innkeeper's poor chances against three trained warriors.[1]

If asked about Cosmo, Ophelia's "betrothed," Daphne would reveal that the woman had no intention of marrying her fiancé, and that, wishing to be rid of him, she had sent him on a fool's errand to find a unicorn that he might prove his virginity to her. Daphne insinuated that unicorns would have abandoned Ophelia long ago and stated that she wished Cosmo all the best in his quest, eager for Ophelia's humiliation and hoping that an enforced marriage would oust her from their shared home.[2]

Lore[edit]

Sprellic and his barmaids are never on the field. I doubt Sprellic has ever lifted a blade in his life, except, perhaps, to slice a carrot. And Daphne, well, though she may have the stature of a warrior, I would not be surprised if she was born with a scrub brush in her hand. Ophelia is no more useful with a weapon, and even less so with a mop. She's got a mean streak, though. Never cross her without a reason. Despite their own lack of fighting or combat skills, these two do share a discriminating eye in that direction. If thou ever dost wish to wager on a duel, speak with Daphne or Ophelia.

Trivia[edit]

  • Should Dupre be in the party while talking to Daphne, she will comment on his "research" into the various beverages of the realm.
  • The only way to ensure that Sprellic loses his duel is to kill him. If the player does so, Daphne will voice her suspicions as to the murder should the Avatar come to collect the winnings.[3]
