Talk:Ultima IX transcript

I just wanted to point out how awesome you are for doing this, Iceblade. This is a big job, and having a complete Ultima IX transcript along with complete book transcript will be cool. Dungy 19:32, 20 March 2012 (PDT)

This wouldn't even have been possible without the 1.19f patch. Those variable names and IDs have been invaluable for this work. - Iceblade
And, it should be added, that you've chosen a very important transcript, since of all the transcripts we have available, the one for U9 has been among the most unreadable and unreliable. The Ultra-Mind 20:21, 21 March 2012 (PDT)

Dang, I've completed so many areas and yet I'm only half way through. I have only 5 more areas left excluding really long NPCs like Raven and LB. Oh well, 50% is still pretty good. Just 98 more to go. - Iceblade

I feel your pain after doing Ultima IV, Ultima VI, Martian Dreams, and Savage Empire. :P Dungy 17:46, 25 July 2012 (PDT)

Keep on trucking, Iceblade! Dungy 14:11, 5 February 2013 (PST)

Down to 10 now or really I should say down to 9 and a 20-in-1. Seriously Raven has more dialogue than entire towns. And complexity-wise... let's just say there are a lot of variables I have to check. Expect at least 50,000 more bytes for this one NPC. - Iceblade 17:40, 5 February 2013 (PST)
Reading the transcripts makes it painfully clear just how bad the Ultima IX dialogues are. Even that alone already makes you work worth.--Tribun 17:46, 5 February 2013 (PST)
Two more down, two to go. Saving the Worst for Last. I wonder if this will hit the full megabyte.... looks at incomplete notes for Raven.... YES! - Iceblade 19:59, 6 February 2013 (PST)

Bugs?[edit]

You can only ask Raphael's name if you know his name? Finding lots of bugs to fix, are we? Dungy 15:48, 6 February 2013 (PST)

I probably won't be fixing these. When we finally hook in a dll to allow for adding dialog, we'll be focused on creating all new dialog from scratch rather attempting to fix the old. Besides, I already have a ton of more important bugs to fix. Though I suppose I could change the initial state of this name variable so that you will always be able to ask the name, but I think that would just open up more issues, since it leads to pre-cleansing topics when you ask for it even if the shrine is cleansed. - Iceblade 16:57, 6 February 2013 (PST)

Done![edit]

HURRAY!!! I am basically finished with this. I still need to go back through and check on a few things here and here for consistency, but this transcript is effectively finished. - Iceblade 01:20, 3 March 2013 (PST)

Amazing work. You've done a LOT of great working improving and expanding upon our Ultima IX sections. I never could have done this. What's next, other than of course releasing an awesome new version of Forgotten Worlds? :P Dungy 04:27, 3 March 2013 (PST)
Fixing up U9 NPC articles, improving U9 icon images, and continuing to rewrite and improve the U9 dungeon solutions. - Iceblade 14:13, 3 March 2013 (PST)

Encyclopedic cleanup[edit]

Do we cleanup material like this--taken from other web sites? I've already done a little bit of that, but there other things that are very unencyclopedic like the some of the text in variable names like "PISSED" and "DISSED" (which I imagine are not canonical), and even a place where the first person is used, referring to an editor.--The Ultra-Mind (talk) 15:23, 8 October 2020 (UTC)

Just saw this. The terms you are referencing are part of variable names for the game's code. These variable come from the executable. Version 1.19f of the game engine has dialogue text and dialogue variables shown as ordinary text in the executable - when open in a hex editor. - Iceblade (talk) 20:26, 28 August 2024 (MDT)

How complete is it now?[edit]

Could we get a completion check? I noticed that Signal_Fire_Lit_By_Stranger is used, but never set. This means if it is initialized to false, then the part where Raven says she had to kill Commander Hays is never executed.--The Ultra-Mind (talk) 08:42, 1 May 2023 (MDT)

This may actually be an engine bug where the dialogue variable never comes true. The transcript was not written through normal gameplay, instead focusing on the dialogue variables current state to determine when dialogue lines occurred. - Iceblade (talk) 20:28, 28 August 2024 (MDT)
