Commander Hays is the former commander of Valoria in Ultima IX.

Description

Before the Avatar’s arrival, Hays had deserted his troops during an attack, with the Avatar finding the dying Reynald as the last witness of said attack. Hays remained in hiding until the Avatar defeated the Daemon Triumvirate and learned the mantra of Valor. At that point, Hays ignited a signal fire and subsequently attacked Raven in an attempt to commandeer her ship.

Hays came to his end by Raven when she had been forced to kill Hays in self-defense.

Trivia

• Hays' associated sequence is bugged and requires a strict sequence of events for his ghost to appear:
  • Before departing the Silver Hart on the first visit to Valoria, Raven must be spoken to regarding the signal fire.
  • Upon returning from Destard, Raven must be spoken to again while the ship remains docked.
  • Following the defeat of the Daemons and the acquisition of the mantra – but prior to cleansing the shrine – the signal fire must be lit.
  • Approaching the docks afterwards will trigger the cutscene with Raven and Hays' ghost.
• Despite Lambert explicitly asking about the commander, no dialogue option exists for the Avatar to inform him of Hays' fate.
