Lord R'hien is a warrior of the Lycaeum and Royal Keeper of the Horses in the time of Ultima V.

Lord R'hien told the Avatar that Truth was in great peril under Blackthorn’s rule. He felt that the new ruler had twisted and warped the meaning of the Virtues, causing the people to live like sheep by his misguided principles. Lord R'hien felt that when Virtue was forced upon an individual, virtuous acts no longer carried any meaning.[1]
Ultima V: Lazarus[edit]

In Ultima V: Lazarus, R'hien was born in Serpent's Hold to two knights, and descended from a long line of knights. R'hien easily grew into the arts of swordplay, jousting, and other practical sports favored by paladins. He soon became a knight and, in a typical display of Courage, Honor, traversed Britannia in search of noble quests.[2]
He partook in many adventures before he eventually came to Trinsic, where he met Lady Hayden while appraising the horses in the stable where she worked. Friendship between them grew, but he eventually returned to Serpent's Hold and she chose to go to the Lycaeum to study the arts of magic. They kept in contact up until the year Blackthorn's tyranny began, when R'hien (now a full member of the Order of the Silver Serpent) moved to the Lycaeum. The two wed, and remained in residence at the Keep of Truth. Because of his skill with horses, Lord Shalineth gave R'hien charge of the Royal Stables.
Lord R'hien and Lady Hayden went riding regularly,[3] and one night they chanced to find Mariah, wounded by a Shadowlord in the forest. The two, knowing that the Avatar’s companions were outlawed, nevertheless took Mariah to the Lycaeum for healing. Vehement in his protection of the Flame of Truth, Lord R'hien openly challenged all who would try to snuff out the light of Truth, refusing to allow Blackthorn to corrupt the Principles like he had the Virtues. He felt evil dwelt deep within every Britannian’s heart, but this could be driven away by the power of goodness.
Easter Eggs[edit]
- In the original game, using the keyword "Steve" will yield the dialogue: "Hi, John! Thanks for putting me in Ultima V!" Steven Meuse and John Miles are credited as programmers, designers and testers of the Commodore 64 and MS-DOS ports of Ultima V.[4][5]
