Praecor Loth is the ghost of the last king of Rhiannon. He appears in Ultima Underworld II.

Description[edit]

Praecor Loth was a warrior king of legendary power, and many believed he would be able to best the Guardian's forces when the Red Titan invaded his world. When he was indecorously slain by an arrow which struck him in the ear during the battle of Rhyna (quite possibly loosed from the bow of a young Lord Thibris[1]), his closest retainers, Lethe, Umbria, and Morphius, determined themselves to find a way to imbue him with some semblance of life, refusing to accept the death of their liege. To this end, the Three concocted a magical ritual which would bind the ghosts of Loth and his entourage to the material plane, and deceived the spirit of their former king into believing he was still alive and reigning of Rhiannon.

The Avatar, after arriving in the dead king's tomb, could encounter the spirit of Loth's queen, Helena and learn of her husband's predicament. After battling to the chamber in which Praecor Loth's spirit lay trapped, the hero could confront the king with the truth of his own demise, finally breaking the spell which held both him and his people in bondage. Thankful to finally be able to go to his rest, Loth would grant the Avatar his battle horn - a magical artifact which would later prove instrumental in ending the Guardian's ensorcellment of Castle Britannia.[2][3]

Lore[edit]

It seems clear to me that a great and vile magic has been worked on that place. I am equally sure that some sort of deception has been played on Praecor Loth, who was by all accounts a good man, and would not have allowed his tomb to become so corrupted. If someone can reach him and explain to him the truth, I feel sure the souls bound in the tomb I built would go free. To pass Lethe, though, would take one braver than I.

Trivia[edit]

  • It is also possible to slay Praecor Loth's ghost and retrieve the horn from his remains.
  • According to the inscription on the entrance to the tomb, Praecor Loth died on the 23rd day of Starsend, in the 28th year of his reign, on the 572nd day of the war against between Rhiannon and the forces of Killorn Keep.
