Ultima III
Class: prayers
Mana: 0
Command: A

Pontori is the earliest known attempt by spellcasters meant to specifically eliminate the undead.

Spell Description[edit]

During the third Age of Darkness, in Sosaria, this enchantment was available to all practitioners of divine magic at the time. When used against an aggressive party of skeletons, zombies, or ghouls, it had a 50% chance of destroying a random portion of the opposing force (from one to 8 attackers). The spell's only fallacy was that it could only be attempted once in any given combat, whether the creatures were successfully destroyed or not, and regardless of which spellcaster attempted it. Despite this drawback, Pontori was an indispensable part of any divine arsenal, as it caused no expenditure of the caster's mana.

After the fall of Exodus, the effects of this spell were reduced somewhat in the Repel Undead spell.

Lore[edit]

Evil takes many forms throughout Sosaria, and some of the most evil are the Undead. Skeletons, ghouls, and zombies roam free in dungeons, forests and open terrain. Although they are formidable opponents in battle, there is a basic weakness in their essence. These servants of evil are vestiges of former living beings now inhabited by an evil force.

If thou should encounter undead creatures, raise thy ankh of Truth before them. If thou dost stand strong in the spirit of Good, evil shall be dispelled from their beings and only their rotting corpses shall remain.

Trivia[edit]

  • Due to Ultima III’s random method of choosing which opposing creatures are destroyed, Pontori can occasionally be cast successfully, but not affect any targets.
