In the normal travels, the Avatar naturally didn't come into contact with modern technology. However, during space- and timeshifted adventures, this was actually the case.

In the valley of Eodon in Savage Empire, Jimmy Malone as a journalist was the owner of a camera, and the bright flash of it proved crucial in oder to free the great fabozz, so that Darden would be cast out of the Urali Tribe, thus ensuing the tribe's future peacefulness to the Avatar and the party. Also, another camera was found in to equipment of Rafkin's Laboratory.

On the Mars of Martian Dreams, William Randolph Hearst wanted the Avatar to search for Reginald Boringstroke on top of Mt. Olympus, who was ordered to take pictures, in return for a heartstone that Hearst held. Finding the man dead, the Avatar brought the camera found with the body to Hearst, who wanted the Avatar to develop the photo plate - a job that Georges Méliès did. Hearst released the heartstone after getting the developed plate.

At the end of the journey Nellie Bly also took a group picture with a camera - a photo that the Avatar would see 95 years later.
