The Avatar taking a nap on a bedroll in Ultima VII

A bedroll is a piece of equipment used to facilitate sleeping outdoors or within caverns and dungeons. Appearing first in Ultima Underworld as a means of achieving a more comfortable slumber, bedrolls would later become indispensable articles for setting up camp in Ultima VII, Ultima VII Part Two and Ultima VIII.

Description[edit]

A bedroll consists of bedding which is capable of being tightly rolled that it might be transported. Once laid out, it is designed to keep the traveller warm and relatively protected from the elements while sleeping, allowing adequate rest over the course of the night.

These transportable beddings for usage in the wilderness first appeared in Ultima Underworld and could be purchased starting with Ultima VII. They remained popular ever since. By the time of Ultima IX, bedrolls were still spotted, but the Avatar was only able the use them where they appeared but could not pick them up for usage elsewhere.

However, if the environment is climatically hostile, then a real tent is needed.

Trivia[edit]

  • In Ultima VII, only one bedroll is required for the party to encamp, and only the Avatar is shown to sleep, despite other party members recovering health over the course of the night.
  • In the SNES Port of Ultima VII, a bedroll may only be used at night.
  • In Ultima IX, one bedroll sits in the mountains north of Britain. Using it, one is able to clearly observe the rotation of the skybox, which normally is not visible due to sleeping in buildings.
