Xenkan Monks

The Xenkan Monks are a group founded by Xenka on the Serpent Isle.

History[edit]

After Xenka had left her village due to her frustrating experiences with the mages of Moonshade, she and her family moved to Monk Isle. There, she gathered followers to help prevent the horrible disaster she had foreseen could destroy the universe, prepare the inhabitants of Serpent Isle and aid the Avatar upon the hero's arrival.

However, things went wrong after Xenka vanished into the Void (probably to wait for said hero). Over time, the monks felt that Xenka's clear instructions were not worthy of a great prophetess. They felt her sometimes weird prophecies were much more mystical, thus editing them together with her instructions until they became almost unreadable poetic gibberish, and losing the original instructions in the process. Having robbed themselves of their guidelines, the order became frozen in dogma and totally divided on what they should actually do.

Some, like Thoxa, felt that more direct action was required, while others around Karnax were strictly against it. In the end, the order did nothing at all. It also became difficult for them to acquire new novices, as the order had become so strict over time that few wanted to join. In the end Thoxa took it upon herself to leave and explore the lands before aiding the Avatar once arrived, much to the horror of some other monks. Due to the divide, the order at first could only help the hero indirectly. Only after the Banes of Chaos caused widespread slaughter did Karnax cave and gave more direct aid.

When Xenka did return in order to help the Avatar's quest, she was extremely angry at how the order had failed in the objectives she had given them. It is very possible that with her return, things would drastically change in the order.

Lore[edit]

Monk Isle was the original home of the Prophetess Xenka. It is where she did most of her studies and, later on, where her followers came to hear her speak and to study her words. Life on Monk Isle is uncomplicated. The bells in the tower govern the day. They toll when it is time to awaken, when it is time for meditation at the monastery when it is time to till the fields and when it is time to retire. This tranquil life is one that I easily grew accustomed to in my young days.
