Thurston is the owner and operator of the flour mill in Paws in Ultima VII.
Description[edit]
The only known miller in the land at the time, Thurston seemed a simple, driven man – finding some stark meaning in his ministration to the mill's grinding wheels, but otherwise feeling lonely and unfulfilled. Like many in the early Age of Armageddon plagued by such worries, Thurston had considered membership in the Fellowship, although he had ultimately decided not to join, citing that the group made him feel uncomfortable.[1]
Should the Avatar press him, it would eventually be revealed that Thurston was infatuated with the owner of the Salty Dog Tavern, Polly, although he was hesitant to act on his feelings. The hero thereafter had the option of alerting the tavern-keeper of Thurston's affections, a move which could eventually spark a blossoming romance between the couple when it was revealed that Polly requited his sentiments.[2]
Thurston could also be approached with a delivery of wheat from the widow Camille, and would pay the Avatar ten gold coins in exchange for transporting it to him.[3]
Lore[edit]
“ | To confirm Polly's assertions, I interviewed a few others in the town. In general they concurred with her observations, especially Thurston. However, he seemed more interested in discussing what she had to say about him than what she noticed about the town. – from Key to the Black Gate (Ultima VII)

Trivia[edit]
- During his studies in the realm Anton noted Thurston's interest in Polly and recorded this observation in his work, Key to the Black Gate.[5]
- Feridwyn, the operator of the local Fellowship homeless shelter will insinuate that Thurston could make more income if he ran the mill with more of an eye towards profit.[6]
- Willy, a baker in Britain, will pay the Avatar four gold for every sack of flour purchased wholesale from Thurston, although such ventures are far from profitable, given that Willy pays but a third of the flour's original cost.[7]
- A modification for the Exult utility for Ultima VII gives the player the ability to grind wheat at the flour mill, although dialogue has been added such that Thurston will grow cross if this is attempted while he is present.
