This article is about the Ultima VII character. For the character from Ultima V, see Camile.
Camille is a widowed farmer living in Paws in Ultima VII with the company of her son, Tobias.
Description[edit]
Camille was one of the few Britannians to recognize the Avatar immediately upon the hero's salutation, and treated the returned champion with marked compassion and humility, being one of the few staunch devotees of the Eight Virtues during the early Age of Armageddon. Her traditional moral stance put her and her son at odds with the local members of the Fellowship, who saw Camille's views as antiquated and superstitious.[1] The virtuous widow, however, refused to return such bigotry in kind, and stated that she believed that the organization had done good in the world and that the people within it were not universally malevolent.[2]
In the wake of the seven-year drought and the death of her husband, Camille's family, like many in Paws, had fallen on hard times, and both she and Tobias could frequently be found working long hours in the fields, trying to earn a modest living off of the sale of carrots and wheat. At the time of the Avatar's travels through the hamlet, Camille had a package of grain ready for delivery to Thurston, the miller – and would ask the hero to assist her by carrying it to the mill in exchange for payment.[3]
Should the Avatar have remained in the village to see out the investigation of a theft of silver serpent venom from the slaughterer Morfin, Camille's son Tobias would eventually be accused of the crime after a vial was found among his belonging by Garritt, the son of the Fellowship shelter operators. Camille, distraught by the charge, would beg the hero to clear her child's name, and with further probing, the Avatar could deduce that Garritt had been the culprit, and had sought to frame Tobias. Should such a happy conclusion be put to the case, Camille would give her heartfelt thanks to the hero, glad that the Avatar of legend saw fit to intervene in the lives of common folk.[4]
Lore[edit]
“ | The only one who even still believes in the Virtues is Camille. I wish I shared her optimism. Her son Tobias is a good boy, but even he thinks she holds too firmly to the old ways. But then, deep inside, I wonder if he did not inherit a bit of her conviction, for I perceive his distrust of The Fellowship. If Garritt — he is Feridwyn’s son — continues trying to persuade Camille to join The Fellowship, ’twill be only a matter of time before Tobias pops him one. Other than living off what little they can grow, Camille and her son earn a bit of extra money by selling wheat to Thurston, the miller. – from Key to the Black Gate (Ultima VII)

Trivia[edit]
- Should the Avatar have no gold with which to pay for carrots, Camille will give the hero some anyway, out of kindness.[3]
- According to design documents for Ultima VII, Camille's husband, who was planned as a living NPC at one point in development, is named Derwin.[6]
- A modification for the Exult utility for Ultima VII adds dialogue in which the Avatar may virtuously return the gold paid by Thurston for the delivery of flour to Camille. The widow, at first refusing the charitable act, will eventually take the money and speak of buying Tobias a meal at the Salty Dog.
