Transcript: Sir Hrothgar

Sir Hrothgar is a mighty warrior living in Jhelom during Ultima IV.

Description[edit]

Hrothgar could be found loitering in Willard's Weaponry, and should the Stranger speak to him he would talk proudly of his resolve to fight for Valor. He would then ask if the hero were the most valiant of souls, rebuking any arrogance found in the answer. Should the Stranger humbly admit frailties, however, Hrothgar would advise seeking out the Shrine of Valor and recommend Aesop's knowledge of the virtue's mantra.[1]

Trivia[edit]

NES remake
  • Hrothgar's name may be taken from the legendary Danish king, Hroðgar, a personage who features in numerous Anglo-Saxon epics and is best known for his appearance in the story of Beowulf.
  • A Sir Hrothgar also appears in the Ultima III clue book Secrets of Sosaria, where he is listed as the individual who explored and mapped the Mines of Morinia.
  • In the Nintendo remake of Ultima IV (Japanese original), either Sir William or Sir Hrothgar can be identified with the fighter in the same location. This character was removed in the English localization.
