Manrel is a woodworker and alchemist in Moonglow in Ultima VI.
Description[edit]
Manrel was a friendly woodworker, who created furniture and cabinets. He admitted to dabbling in alchemy, but was a novice, having tried to create a recipe for healing potions, but instead came across the ingredients for a powerful red mead. Unfortunately, there was little market for his drink, with Fraiser's Folly at the Blue Bottle Tavern being the most popular spirit in town. Most of Manrel's time was spent with his drinking buddy Derydlus, and Mandrel relayed to the Avatar that he received his codex tattoo as the result of a late night of drinking after the Avatar discovered the Codex of Ultimate Wisdom.[1]
Manrel's cousin Beyvin was recently killed, and was buried with the rune of Honesty. Manrel was willing to give the Avatar the key to his cousin's crypt in exchange for promising to place daffodils on the site.
Lore[edit]
“ | The Blue Bottle Tavern serves the best ale you'll find anywhere. My old pal Derydlus practically lives there and Manrel does almost as well. Him you might catch working occasionally, but nobody is perfect.
... Anyhow, Beyvin's got a nice crypt in the secret catacombs under the tavern. Manrel slips down there when he can to pay his respects. They were cousins, and Manrel's got the only key to the crypt. – from The Book of Prophecy (Ultima VI)

Trivia[edit]
- Manrel's counterpart in reality is an Amtgard player who assumed the persona of Manrel the Alchemist in the organization's former Grand Duchy of Barad Duin, where Ultima VI writer Dr. Cat and artist-writer Manda Dee (Penumbra) also participated and, like Richard Garriott with the Society for Creative Anachronism, subsequently portrayed many of its members within the game. The Ultima VI character's friend, Derydlus, is named after a citizen of Barad Duin who reigned as its third monarch.[2]
